Malaika Jamal

Malaika is a senior majoring in Cognitive Science and minoring in Health Care Studies at the University of Southern California. After graduating, she plans on taking a gap year before applying to medical school. Ultimately, she would like to pursue a career as a surgeon, although she is not sure of which specialty. During her gap year, Malaika plans on travelling and gaining new experiences before a long term commitment to medical school.

Currently USC AMWA’s Treasurer, Malaika has been in AMWA for two years. She joined because she admired the strength of female physicians and aspiring female physicians. Malaika wanted to be a part of the amazing group of USC AMWA women who share the same passions and interests as her in healthcare and the medical field. She believes that USC AMWA is a strong support group, and really enjoys the educational and social components of the organization. One of Malaika’s favorite aspects of USC AMWA is that it is a great group to network and make friends because it helps her bear with the premedical journey.

Outside of USC AMWA, Malaika is very active. Some activities she does include tutoring elementary kids, working with children with autism, conducting neuroscience research, volunteering at OIC Hospital, and participating in other service-oriented clubs at USC. Some of Malaika’s hobbies include driving, food truck hunting, taking easy scenic hikes dancing, teaching, and binge-watching various shows on multiple platforms.

For incoming members or those who are hesitant to join, Malaika advises you to join and have fun because USC AMWA activities are enjoyable and not strenuous time-commitment events. Also, USC AMWA provides amazing opportunities and connections with other students whom you may end up interacting with frequently in the future. For those who are new, please come to as many events as possible, ask questions, and let’s get to know each other.!

This year, Malaika is really excited to help grow and expand AMWA. She is also eager to start some of the great activities we prepared for this year. “You rock! We rock! Let's all rock! Can't wait to get to know you!!!”
